The aim of the following paper has been to test the democratic peace theory through applying it on the conflict between Russia and Georgia in 2008.  This to either falsify the theory or come to the conclusion that the states? democracy was not satisfactory in regards to the definition of liberal democracy. The questions asked are: Was Russia and Georgia democratic states? Is democracy a protection from war? And which aspects of the liberal democratic theory, if any, were not satisfactory in either of the countries? The results show that the democratic peace theory is valid in this case and that neither one of the states were democratic.

Föreliggande uppsats syftar till att se om en lösning av den afghanska konflikten och en varaktig fred i landet är möjligt. Den teoretiska utgångspunkten har utgjorts av en del freds- och konfliktteorier samt en rad konfliktlösningsprinciper. Jag har med hjälp av en kvalitativ textanalys sett på fredens möjligheter i landet samt på möjliga lösningar av den afghanska konflikten. Jag har kommit fram till att landet har en oerhörd lång väg att gå för att nå en positiv fred. De principer som gör det möjligt för konfliktparter att leva med oförenliga mål, acceptera varandra och leva sida vid sida med varandra finns inte i dagens Afghanistan, vilket också gör lösningen av den afghanska konflikten svår.

Med i första hand kvantitativa metoder identifieras ett antal utslagsgivande faktorer för att ett land ska få McDonald?s. Det konstateras att demokrati förr var en mycket viktig faktor men idag helt upphört att var det, medan närheten till USA idag är viktigare än någonsin förr.

This essay is about the Swedish folk and troubadour singer Fred Åkerström and particularly his interpretations of the Swedish national poet Carl Michael Bellman. With Åkerström being a socialist, he converted his beliefs into what he believed Bellman should stand for and not stand for, politically and historically and the picture he did not take kindly to is called "The bourgeoisie". And in his interpretations of Bellman Åkerström used his deep bass voice and singing with maximum potential that earned him the nickname "Carl Michael Decibelman" along with a trio he created called Trio CMB. But along with alcoholism and financial problems Åkerström died at an age of 48 years old and had probably much more to give the Swedish musical society..

Undersökningen i denna uppsats kretsar kring det civila samhällets roll underfredsprocessen i Moçambique. Trots att ett brutalt inbördeskrig drabbadeinvånarna hårt lyckades de upprätthålla ett stort engagemang för fred. Direkt fred uppnåddes genom det avtal som signerades 1992. Sedan dess har landet haft fred i drygt 15 år, trots att inga vanligt förekommande försoningsverktyg som sanningskommissioner och rättegångar upprättades. Uppsatsen ämnar undersöka det civila samhällets roll för dels den direkta freden men framförallt deras omfattande arbete för att se till att försoning skapades i landet.

The process of drug discovery is very slow and expensive. There is a need for reliable in silico methods; however the performance of these methods differs.This work presents a targeted study on how the drug discovery methods used in OpenEye?s tools ROCS, EON and FRED perform on targets with small ligands. It was examined if 12 compounds (markers) somewhat similar to AMP could be detected by ROCS in a random data set comprised of 1000 compounds. It was also examined if EON could find any electrostatic similarities between the queries and the markers.

The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the present importance of liberal education in the Swedish "folkhögskola" by studying its expressions in the teaching of literature and fiction. I have interviewed teachers at four different schools about their opinions of liberal education, literature and cultural heritage, means of instruction, and influence of their students. Liberal education in this thesis is considered as a process. Starting from our own experiences we meet something strange to us and while absorbing this in our experiences we change. But its purpose also is to convey the canon of Western literature.

Genom att undersöka implementeringen av tre delar av Guatemalas fredsavtal som vi anser ha stor betydelse för uppbyggnaden av en rättvis och fungerande demokratisk stat försöker vi utvärdera huruvida det råder demokratisk fred i landet. Traditionellt bygger teorin på att två demokratiska stater löper mindre risk att hamna krig med varandra, men den är även gällande för interna stridigheter i samma avseende att en stabil demokrati är fredligare. Således borde freden vara hållbar i Guatemala om det råder demokratisk fred vilket är fredsavtalets mål. Genom en kvalitativ studie prövar vi fredsavtalets mål mot tillståndet i dagens Guatemala och kommer fram till att om än demokrati existerar är den inte stabil..

Valen 2006 var de första fria valen i den Demokratiska Republiken Congo sedan självständigheten på 1960-talet. Med valen föddes hopp om ett demokratiskt styre och en fred. Vår uppsats är en fallstudie av Congo utifrån kvalitativ textanalys. Vi försöker besvara frågan om valen har haft någon betydelse för en demokratisering, samt om de har haft någon effekt på ett fredsbyggande. Detta gör vi genom att analysera valen utifrån viktiga demokratiska kriterier, och genom teorier om vilken roll demokratisering kan ha i konfliktlösning.

This paper examines the ideological content of the compulsory school policy of the Swedish Liberal Party. The aim of the study is to investigate whether the Liberal Party does really represent a liberal policy for the compulsory school, or if it is more accurately described as conservative. The analysis is carried through by two separate critical examinations of the Liberal Party motion on school politics to the parliament and the Conservative Party motion on school politics to the parliament respectively. A comparison is then made between the ideological contents of the two documents. The specific party policies are linked to universal definitions of liberalism and conservatism with the help of an analytical tool consistent of a series of educational philosophies.

During the election the year 1991 Moderaterna focused upon questions that concerned the economic growth and the free market. In the election at year 2006 Moderaterna appointed themselves as ?the new labour party? and were called social liberals by several critiques.

SIDA?s relief work in Bosnia aims at making the country ready for a membership in the EU where the main focus lies in the creation of a sustainable state as well as liberalizing the market to create an increased economic cooperation between Bosnia and the rest of Europe. These ambitions are closely related to the neo-liberal theory of state building which aims at creating democratic societies in line with the western democracy model, with a liberal economy constituting its base. Despite generous financial aid, the democratic and economic development in Bosnia is moving very slowly and the ethnical tensions seem to grow despite international involvement in the country. The purpose of this study is to evaluate SIDA?s present relief work in Bosnia out of a peace perspective.

Kvinnor har under lång tid arbetat för fred världen över och kopplingen mellan kvinnorörelsen och fredsrörelsen är stark. Den poststrukturalistiska feministen Nira Yuval-Davis har sammanställt tre förklaringar till varför kvinnor arbetar med fred och varför de ofta väljer att göra detta i fredsorganisationer för enbart kvinnor. I denna teoriprövande studie har jag testat denna förklaringsmodell dels på det israeliska samhället, dels på fem olika fredsorienterade kvinnoorganisationer i Israel för att se om förklaringarna infrias eller kan förkastas.Undersökningen har visat att Yuval-Davis samtliga förklaringar infrias. Enligt den första förklaringen kan kvinnor, trots den allmänna värnplikten i Israel, anses tillhöra det civila samhället vilket innebär att de har möjlighet att arbeta för fred. Enligt den andra förklaringen väljer israeliska kvinnor att arbeta med fred i kvinnoorganisationer eftersom de diskrimineras i organisationer för både män och kvinnor.

Genom en litteraturbaserad teorikonsumerande metod undersöks konsekvenserna av att konsociationalismen tillämpats för att nå konfliktlösning i Nordirland som om mycket realiserats genom förvaltningsstrukturen. Både konsociationalismen och förvaltningen visar sig besitta inneboende problem. Då konsociationalismen inte uppfylls till fullo kan detta komma att påverka det fortsatta samarbetet och därmed fredssituationen negativt. Förvaltningen å andra sidan kan i dagsläget inte uppnå grundläggande demokratiska principer såsom folklig medverkan. Tillräcklig uppmärksamhet har inte riktads mot vikten av en väl fungerande förvaltning, trots att denna besitter förmågan att påverka både attityder och den grundläggande motsättningen i ett konflikthärjat samhälle.

Liberal theorists typically argue that state action should not favor any particular conception of the good or meaningful life. On this view the defining characteristic of the liberal state is neutrality among rivaling ideas of the good. This thesis argues that state neutrality is impossible to maintain in practice. Two different versions of state neutrality; neutral justification and neutral aims, are used to analyze a wide range of political issues. It is concluded that far from being neutral, the liberal state favors individualistic and market oriented conceptions of the good life.
